Pancake has its name in every country such as crêpe resembled in Britain, injera in Horn of Africa, cheela in North India, dorayaki in Japan, filloas in the north-west of Spain, and finally serabi in our beloved country Indonesia. Let’s move to the second topic of this pancake, durian. Durian is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio. The name “durian” is derived from the Malay-Indonesian languages word for duri or “spike”, a reference to the numerous spike protuberances of the fruit, together with the noun-building suffix -an. There are 30 recognized Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit. Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market because other species are sold only in their local regions. Durian is regarded as the king of fruits because of its large size, strong odor, and formidable thorn-covered husk. The fruit can grow as large as 30 cm in length, 15 cm in diameter, and three kg in weight. Its shape ranges from oblong to round, its husk can have green to brown color, and the color of its flesh can be pale yellow to red depending on its species. Actually, it has a very special and unique taste but many Western people don’t like it as they describe its odor as rotten egg or mushy onion making them feel reluctant to try it. Novelist Anthony Burgess describes that eating durian is “like eating sweet raspberry blancmange in the lavatory”. Once you try it then you’ll understand how it tastes. For those who love durian, they will say if its taste is mildly sweet and very creamy, not unlike a rich cheesecake. So, we advise that you should try it at least once in a life time because it contains a high amount of sugar, vitamin C, potassium, and the serotonergic amino acid tryptophan. It is a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and it is recommended as a good source of raw fats by several raw food advocates. It’s very beneficial for your health anyway.
