PUTU CAKE RECIPE – Cooking Putu cake usually uses a piece of bamboo which is placed on a box of zinc/aluminium which has given hole, causing a whistling sound that rippled. This time, we present you ways to make Putu cake, with bamboo as a mold, but the technique is different.


  • 400 grams dry rice flour
  • 150 grams a half old grated coconut
  • 125 grams brown sugar, sliced thinly
  • 300 ml water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 pieces pandan leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon green dye (bamboo leaf boiled water with diameter of approximately 3-4 cm)
  • sheets of banana leaves, cut the size of 5 x 5 cm


  1. Prepare a pot, boil water, add salt, pandan leaves and green coloring, and remove.
  2. Put the rice flour in a container, pour a little bit of warm water while stirring by hand until the mixture forms smooth grain, do until the water runs out.
  3. Prepare a coarse sieve, strain the flour dough, rub to form fine grains.
  4. Take bamboo, insert a small piece of banana leaf as a mat, and then pour 1/2 tablespoon flour mixture, make a hole in the middle of the cake mixture with a forefinger. Put brown sugar, cover with 1/2 tablespoon of rice flour dough (do not press).
  5. Invert the mold containing the dough onto a baking pan covered by banana leaves, remove the mold. Adjust the distance between dough that has been printed, do not close, and do this step until the pan is full.
  6. Steam over high heat for 10 minutes, remove, put in a flat container and serve hot with coconut sprinkles.
