SOTO BATHOK MBAH KATRO: APPETIZING, SAVORY, AND FRESH – Soto (also known as sroto, tauto, or coto) is a traditional Indonesian soup. It is sometimes considered as Indonesia’s national dish and has a wide range of variations. Soto is available in many warung (stalls), open-air eateries on many street corners, to fine dining restaurants and luxurious hotels. Soto Bathok Mbah Katro is a hit new-comer for soto lovers. Soto Bathok is unique because of its location and the serving way which uses bathok/coconut shell (as you can see in the following picture).

In starting his business Mr. Katro Sumaryo, the owner of this Warung Soto, previously has no background ideas in the culinary field. He worked for 22 years in a hotel. “But the experience working in the hotel is quite helpful of  how should I serve the consumers well,” he said. Mr. Katro Sumaryo added and revealed why he uses the coconut shell as the bowl. It is because coconut shell is cheaper compared to normal serving bowl. In addition, the usage of bathok can also be distinctive and it can attract customers.

Located in the North of Sambisari Temple, Sambisari Village, Purwomartani Sub-district, Kalasan, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, Soto Bathok is always crowded by many visitors. Not only using unique bowl and delicious, but another thing that makes Soto Bathok differents from others is the building also. The stall is located in the middle area of the rice field. The atmosphere of the countryside and rice paddies will actually refresh the visitors, because the open dining concept and how it blends with nature. In Soto Bathok Mbah Katro, the dining area consists of huts to eat while sitting that can accommodate the number of people in large quantities. There is also a table and chairs for 2-4 people. The whole construction using bamboo and wood.

Soto bathok is containing rice, beef slices, tauge, cabbage, celery leaf slices which are smothered with hot beef broth. Appetizing, savory, and fresh. The flavor even becomes more delicious because it uses bathok as a serving bowl. As an additional side dish, you can choose quail egg satay and fried tempeh. Fried tempe is the ultimate side dish wanted by the customers. It’s crispy and super yummy. If you like, you can also add lemon juice and chilies to your soto. For the price, it’s relatively cheap. Awesome! It spends less than $2 to enjoy all the delight of soto bathok, fried tempeh, quail eggs and iced tea or lemon ice.

Every day the stall opens from 06.00 a.m. to 16.00 p.m. If you want to have fresh breakfast and enjoy the complete menu (because there are so many visitors, usually the most wanted side dish like fried tempe and quail egg satay have been sold before midday), we suggest you to come there between 06.00 – 09.00 a.m. Good luck.
